Rewinding the Years: Dental Care Tips for Older Adults

Once my children were grown and on their own, I decided it was time to care of me. One of the first things I did was make an appointment with the dentist. I quickly discovered that years of not keeping up with my own dental care had taken a heavy toll on my teeth. Whereas I thought my teeth were just fine, the dentist pointed out several problems that were going to require a lot of work. When talking to friends, I found out that many of them were in the same boat. This blog is for people like me who just did not have time to keep up with their own dental care.

Lingual Braces Are Like A Ghost Because You Can't See Them

Have you made a decision that you want to seek adult orthodontic treatment but want to know what options you have? Perhaps you are wary about getting traditional braces. There are other options that may appeal to you. Lingual braces are a type of orthodontic treatment that is composed of wires just like traditional braces. However, they are installed on the back surfaces of teeth rather than the front. This means that you can get the same straightening results without anyone knowing that you are wearing braces. The following points will help you understand more about this innovative alternative to traditional braces.

Who

Lingual braces are a good option for individuals who desire a discreet orthodontic treatment. The results at the end of treatment are comparable to traditional braces and the techniques used to straighten are similar. People may choose this type of orthodontic solution if they do not want it to be obvious that they have ongoing orthodontic treatment. Because these braces are placed behind the teeth, they might be a good option for individuals who participate in contact sports as well as models and celebrities who want to have a seamless treatment.

Why

Straight teeth are something that many people desire. Many years ago the only option would have been to get traditional braces. Orthodontic treatments like lingual braces offer the transparency that some individuals desire due to their employment, lifestyle, or personal preferences. Properly aligned teeth can improve self-confidence and has other perks such as better digestion because food can be chewed correctly.

Caring for Lingual Braces

Individuals who choose lingual braces take care of them the same way that individuals with traditional braces take care of their teeth. You will need to continue having good oral hygiene habits. Proper tooth brushing and flossing between brackets will remove food that can trap bacteria. If you opt for lingual braces, it may feel awkward flossing behind your teeth initially. This is something that you will get used to as you get used to having braces. There are limited food restrictions. You have to remember that brackets can break. Therefore it is best to limit or avoid eating hard foods or chewing on objects like pencils.

An orthodontist is a good resource to use to understand more about lingual braces. They can help you compare orthodontic solutions and pair you with the best orthodontic solutions for your lifestyle, budget, preferences, and alignment issues. This is the best way to take the guesswork out of choosing an orthodontic treatment and to get an idea of the estimated treatment times for each treatment.
